India signed and ratified the Kyoto protocol in August 2002. Since India is a developing country, it is exempted from the framework of the treaty. It can gain in terms of transfer of technology and enjoy foreign investments in its clean development mechanisms (CDM) projects.
After the Copenhagen summit on climate change in 2009, India has come up along with China with many initiatives which both countries are working upon. Although both the countries have not accepted any reduction targets but voluntarily set targets for carbon emission reduction.
India has proposed 25 percent decline in its carbon dioxide emission by 2030 while China has proposed 40 percent reduction in its carbon intensity by 2020.
